I’ve been enamoured with the dramatic look of film noir as well as the classic Hollywood portraits of George Hurrell and the Harcourt Studio in Paris. More lately, I’ve been loving the work of Vincent Peters who puts a modern twist on the genre. So I decided to play with lighting to try to capture the look and feel.Â
Photographers of the 1940’s used really big fresnel lights that can look a lot like spotlights. I had bought three really cheap LED fresnels before I immigrated to the United States. I only bought them for producing video interviews, but I never got a chance to use them before my move. So I pulled them out of storage after three years and dusted them off. Even though they weren’t that bright, they actually worked at giving me that film noir look I was hoping to capture. Â
