A Sliver of Light

I’m a resident at RAW Photographic Studios in Denver. One of the things I love about working out of the studio is that I get to hang out with some very talented artists. So when Tony Clapp asked if I wanted to hang out for the evening with Don Hales and Josh Hendrickson, I said, “Hell ya!”

Don and Tony gripped for Josh and I and generously shared their ideas with us. This is a shot that I’ve wanted to do for a while and Josh brought it up as a shot concept. It took us a while to nail down. We all had different ideas as to how to dial it in. In the end, we went with Don’s idea to simply use a simple reflector and tape the front so that we just had a slit of light.

With my first test shot I used my 50mm and I got a lot of lens flare. I switched to an 85mm with a lens hood for the subsequent images. We flagged the light and that eliminated most flare if I shot from the right angle.

The models are Everyn and Alexandria. They were super patient as we set this all up.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the set up, which is probably not at all like most people would expect it to look like…
